School of Foreign Languages

History:

The history of the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) can be traced back to the teaching-research section of Northeast Petroleum University. It moved forward during the following years: the first in-campus enrollments of students in 1978; was renamed as Department of Foreign Languages, which consisted of 3 languages (English, Russian and Japanese) in 1994; offered English major undergraduates programs in 2001; established School of Foreign Languages, comprising English Department and Department of Foreign Languages Teaching for Non-foreign language Majors in 2006; offered Russian major undergraduates program in 2010; offered master degree of Foreign Language and Education in 2013.

Departments:

SFL conducted structural adjustments in 2013: Department One of Foreign Languages Teaching for Non-Foreign Language Majors, Department Two of Foreign Languages Teaching for Non-Foreign Language Majors, Graduate English Language, English Language, Russian Language, and Language Innovation CenterThe school assumes multi-undertakings, including English major undergraduate programs, Russian major undergraduate programs, Foreign Language and Education Graduate Programs, Foreign Languages Teaching for Non-Foreign Language Majors at all levels from undergraduate to doctorate programs, and training tasks for continuing education students.

Faculty:

The school has a teaching faculty and an administrative staff of 92, including a team consisting of 86 full-time faculty, 10 professors, 50 associate professors, and 36 lecturers. Among the teaching faculty, there are 2 PhDs and 2 PhD candidates, as well as 11 master student supervisors.

Facilities:

The school boasts a teaching and research platform, with language laboratories, online English learning resources, and an online course management platform. It is also in possession of an independent library with a collection of more than 11,000 copies of books, over 60 academic journals, and 7 audio-studios (368 seats in total).

Research:

The school attaches great importance to research work and has presided over 14 projects of provincial teaching reformation and 20 projects of bureau level teaching reformation; 1 excellent teaching achievement at provincial and ministerial level; and 14 excellent teaching achievements at bureau level. 154 papers, 3 monographs, and 6 textbooks are published, and 6 national patents are applied. As such, its students have won awards and prizes in various competitions, including Second Classroom, the National English Competition for College Students, as well as challenging speech, reading, and writing contests. In 2016, there were over 2700 participants, and they won 108 national awards.

Students:

Now 10 postgraduates and about 130 undergraduates are enrolled. The vision of SFL focuses on cultivating foreign language quality training to meet the demands of international economic and social development and produce professionals with a global horizon. It collaborates with colleagues from universities abroad, and its students have participated in exchanges with a variety of institutions. Between 2017 and 2021, there will be over 30 students going to study in Russia.

Vision and Mission:

Adhering to the idea of "moral integrity in cultivation" and persisting with improving teaching quality, the school will continue to take enhancing teaching quality and training high-level talents as the chief responsibilities. Following the One Belt, One Road Initiative, SFL has formed and perfected innovative evaluation systems and teaching strategies and cultivated teams of innovative and entrepreneurial talents with international perspective.

Our aim of education has been emphasizing much on how to improve students’ external communication skills, just as the goal of cultivating "Oil+Foreign Languages" New Engineering and Technical Disciplines is, so is the objective of constructing "Foreign Languages+Disciplines" New Liberal Arts Disciplines, to strive to achieve the purpose of building a high-level centennial university.
